Private Views of Snowdonia
If you were asked to choose your favourite spot in Snowdonia which would you pick? That was the difficult task facing thirty contributors to a striking new book about the Snowdonia National Park just published by Gomer Press. With dramatic photography by Steve Lewis, and in collaboration with the Snowdonia Society, Private Views of Snowdonia, features short accessible essays by people who live or work in this most magical of National Parks. Contributors range from farmers, park wardens, mountain rescue members to artists, writers, community leaders and others. Some, like Kyffin Williams, Dafydd Elis Thomas and Jim Perrin are names of national standing; others, though less celebrated, communicate an equally valid love of the land and its way of life. As Bryn Terfel says in his foreword to the book, it “provides a perspective on Snowdonia rarely seen; that of the everyday people who live and work in the area, who have helped, and are still helping, to shape the area and its culture. We are privileged that they have been chosen to share with us, in their own words, their thoughts, ideas, memories and emotions, and allowed us a small glimpse of what makes the Snowdonia landscape and its communities a very special part of the world.” For more information about the book log on to: http://www.gomer.co.uk/gomer/en/gomer.ViewBook/isbn/184323484X

Lovespoons
Recently, I have received several letters at my Welsh lovespoon website www.davidwesternlovespoons.com from clients inquiring about purchasing a "Celtic lovespoon".

I sell Welsh lovespoons and am unsure what a Celtic lovespoon would be as our Irish, Scottish, Cornish and Manx cousins on the British Isles did not participate in lovespoon carving in any appreciable way. Our Breton cousins in France would place a unique folding spoon in the groom's hatband on wedding day, but only the Welsh took the lovespoon to the romantic heights it has achieved over the centuries.

Our fellow Celts have vibrant and expansive cultures which don't need the addition of lovespoons. To all the Welsh out there, I say be very proud of this cultural treasure of ours and refrain from calling it "Celtic". One would never think of the highland games as "celtic games" or Guinness as "Celtic" beer and so it should be with the Welsh lovespoon. It is ours and we should be proud of that. I realize that the 'Celtic lovespoon' thing is a nifty marketing ploy to involve Americans of Irish and Scottish heritage in lovespoon buying, but all people of all backgrounds should feel welcome to give lovespoons without the need to highjack the name.

Rugby Memorabilia
2005 has been a big year for rugby in Wales, the national team winning winning the Grand Slam, Welsh players outperforming the rest on the British Lions tour of New Zealand and now rugby is about to hit the headlines again with the Autumn internationals including the ‘centenary test’ celebrating 100 years of the classic Wales v All Blacks fixture. Neath based firm Rugby Relics are celebrating this centenary with a special ‘signed’ Wales 1905 team print and if you fancy something special how about a jersey worn in the game. Memorabilia from the Wales 2005 Grand Slam is also available including paperweights containing the actual turf from which Gavin Henson scored the winning penalty goal against England. Further information can be found on the Rugby Relics News page.
