REASONS TO SMILE - AS TRIVIA EVENING RAISES MONEY FOR FORMER
SOCCEROO’S CANCER FUND
Bluebirds Down Under organized another successful trivial
pursuit evening on Saturday 16 July at the Kauri Hotel,
Pyrmont. It was a top evening as $ 2000 was raised for
the Johnny Warren cancer appeal. The cheque was sent to
the Sydney Cancer Foundation.
Congratulations must go to Cardiff City supporter Captain
Rich (Richard Jefferies) who co-ordinate the event alongside
the Everton supporters club.
The Kauri Hotel has become the home for the Bluebirds
down under who hold regular monthly gatherings at the watering
hole opposite the fish markets. The Cardiff fans get to
watch the most recent games on the big screen whilst fellow
welsh football fans often call in for a bit of a get together.
The Swansea fans are usually the brunt of a few jokes and
at the trivia evening the bluebirds enlisted the voices
of the other competing teams to sing some good natured
challenges to the Jacks but the Swansea fans were not to
be outdone and soon the massed crowd at the Kauri were
singing back towards the Cardiff contingent. West Ham in
particular were more than delighted to send a few choice
lines the
bluebirds way much to the amusement of all gathered. In
fact one of the highlights of the evening was the camaraderie
between football fans from all over Wales and the UK.
The very special guests were Johnny Warren’s brother
Ross and his son Jamie patrons of the Jamberoo Hotel. Ross
and Jamie were proud to represent Johnny who had earlier
this year been claimed by Cancer and accept the fund raising
on Johnny’s behalf. Former Cardiff City striker Adrian
Alston was meant to attend but was foiled by a last minute
hitch but he did manage to send his 1974 World Cup Socceroo’s
blazer which was auctioned off for $800. This was a fine
gesture by Alston who is well known for his earthy attitude
and generosity to those less fortunate.
Eventual quiz winners were the cagey West Ham United closely
followed by the Cowbridge all stars. Swansea City, Bangor
and Merthyr finished in the top five whilst Cardiff echoed
their teams fortunes with a mid table finish. Meanwhile
Uefa cup surprise package Carmarthen Town would have been
worried
if they performed as badly as their quiz team, although
they did win in the glamour stakes.
Captain Rich was please with the turnout and the fundraising
efforts and said. “ It was great fun, a great night,
lots of noise and chants but all done in a spirit of goodwill
and friendship.”
